USA holiday haul:

I wholeheartedly promise that I will shut up and stop posting blog posts and YouTube videos about our America trip very soon, but first I wanted to share a few things I bought while we were away.  Craig and I were both more interested in spending our money on nice food and memorable experiences than on shopping during this holiday, but I did end up buying one or two keepsakes to bring home.

I may not be the girliest of girls, but I do still get excited about the prospect of being able to buy make up and skin care products that you can't easily get hold of in the UK.  The (nearly) spherical EOS lip balms hold something of a celebrity status in the online beauty world, so I picked one up in the Strawberry Sorbet scent at Target to give it a go.  While the lip balm smells and tastes great and I really like the novelty of its unique shape and design, I don't actually find the product itself very moisturising or long lasting, which was a bit of a disappointment.  Luckily, it didn't cost an arm and a leg, so I don't feel too cheated!

On the same trip to Target I also felt the need to replace my mascara.  Maybelline seem to have around four million different types of mascara in their range over here, and there are even more to choose from in the US!  I settled on Volum' Express Colossal Pumped Up! Waterproof (always waterproof) which doesn't seem to be available in the UK as of yet.  I'm happy with the results of this one, but the brush is a little larger and more unwieldy than what I'm used to (cue an increase in the number of times I poke myself in the eye each morning).

I was very restrained and only made one homeware purchase (again, at Target - seriously, I could have spent many, many more happy hours browsing in there) throughout the whole two weeks, despite a lot of temptation.  It was love at first sight between me and this 20oz Mason Tumbler by Aladdin, with a burnt orange lid and straw.  The tumbler is made of plastic, as well as being reusable and insulated, so I can use it to keep drinks cold.  Probably just water though, as it's a little on the large size for iced coffee!

I made sure we fitted a visit to Bath & Bodyworks into our itinerary so that I could buy some miniature scented candles that are rumoured to be the best around.  Again, a lot of these scents have been made famous by bloggers and YouTubers but are impossible to source at home.  Unfortunately, there definitely wasn't room in my suitcase for their large, three wick candles, so I settled for three miniatures for $10.  The scents I chose were Autumn, Marshmallow Fireside and Leaves (probably the one most raved about by YouTubers!) and I'm looking forward to savouring them during the autumn and winter months.

Last, but definitely not least, I nabbed a bargain pyjama top in the Old Navy sale that perfectly sums up my feelings about running on a treadmill!

Mi-Pac Cosmos rucksack:

I followed through on my recent wish list post and bought myself a new rucksack for my dissertation and documentary travels.  Of course, the bag I chose in the end wasn't on my wish list at all.  Not long after writing that post I stumbled upon the Mi-Pac backpack in the cosmos print on the Urban Outfitters website and instantly fell in love.  I ended up purchasing it on Amazon (and saved myself a couple of pence) but at £30ish this rucksack was among the cheapest I've seen that matched my needs.

As I've already mentioned previously, I was specifically looking for something that had a secure and protected space for my laptop, as well as plenty of space for books, cables, bits and bobs of camera equipment and even clothes if I need to stay overnight somewhere during filming.  This backpack has all of that, and I'm really happy with the quality and the pretty print - it's perfect!

Inferior Inspiration #12:

As strange as it feels to write here, in a few short weeks I will be finished all of my postgrad classes.  Honestly, I didn't even make a dent in all of that stationery I bought...  The course isn't quite over yet, though.  Between May and August I will be working on my dissertation which will involve plenty of research, writing and also filming.

As I'll be lugging books and camera equipment around Edinburgh and Glasgow (and possibly even further afield) for months, I thought it might nice to treat myself to a sensible yet handsome backpack.  The bags I've been looking at for inspiration all have a specific padded pocket that would fit my laptop and keep it safe.  They are also all extortionate!  You can't beat a good rucksack though, right?

1. The Pop Quiz Plus backpack from Herschel Supply Company is basic in design but still beautiful.  Inside you'll find a cute red and white striped lining and as many useful pockets a girl (or boy) could ever need. (£50ish)

2. For something a little more feminine (but no less practical) there's the Jill-E laptop backpack in a more traditional style.  Budding photographers might be interested to know that you can purchase a camera insert for this bag to keep your equipment safe and secure on the go.  I love the style of this bag, but the pale beige colour makes me nervous.  I know it would end up filthy in no time! (£40ish)

3. This Goodordering retro backpack in forest green fondly reminds me of primary school bags and the '90s in general.  I'm not sure how good the quality of this bag would be in reality (I found it on Amazon) but it comes in several colours and looks like it has plenty of space for books as well as a laptop. (£59)

4. The interior of the Incase Campus mini backpack is - to be frank - pretty ugly.  However, I really love the exterior shape and colour combination of bright yellow and muted grey.  It's modern, lightweight and the hideous interior is very useful and (mostly) hidden from view. (£39.95)

5. I am a sucker for anything bright blue, and this Unique Vintage Korean style backpack is no exception.  It actually comes in a whole host of beautiful colours, but the blue is my favourite.  I like the classic design, and it seems like this one can hold a lot whilst still looking cute! (£20ish)

6. Curveball!  The JanSport Superbreak Sleeve is nothing like the other rucksacks on this list, but it still appeals to me.  Clearly not much would fit into this bag (aside from a laptop) but it's such a neat design that you can just grab and go.  I love it! (£15ish)

Inferior Inspiration #9: Halloween edition!

Happy Halloween!  Even if you aren't dressing up and going out to celebrate this year, it's still fun to get in the festive spirit.  Here's some Halloween themed inspiration to put you in the mood:

1. I have a Scroobius Pip jumper in a very similar style to this Skeleton Sweater from Topshop, and it's so cosy and easy to wear.  I could see myself sporting this one all year round, but it's especially appropriate for October! (£35)

2. If you fancy a quiet one on All Hallows' Eve, you can always treat yourself to a lovely bath with the Lush Pumkin bubble bar, a nice drink and a good book. (£2.75)

3. These Topshop Halloween Nail Wraps make everyone's favourite terrifying monsters look super cute. (£6)

4. Craig and I spotted this Jack and Jones Skull Sweater for sale in USC.  It doubles up as both a Halloween sweater and a slightly morbid Christmas jumper.  Jumpers in this style are pretty unisex, and I wouldn't feel strange wearing this one.  If Craig decided to buy one, I would definitely pinch it! (£45)

5. I have a soft spot for novelty Le Creuset pieces, and this Petite Pumpkin Casserole (available at John Lewis) is adorable.  It almost inspires me to get cooking!  Almost... (£20)

6. You knew I wouldn't be able to resist including a decorative cushion, didn't you?  This embroidered skull cushion from Paperchase is cheery and creepy - what's not to love? (£22.50)

7. Another Topshop sweater, this time a cosy Knitted Pumpkin Face Jumper.  The design is almost verging on too scary for me, but I'm a self confessed wuss! (£38)

Winter woollies 2013:

Full blown winter weather is nearly here again, and I'm sure you've all heard the rumours that we're in for a cold, wet and snowy time from now on!  You might remember my winter fashion wishlist from last year (and Craig's boy version), and I've decided to keep up the tradition.  It's highly unlikely I'll be able to afford many new clothes this winter, thanks to my new measly student budget, but a girl can dream!

1. Khaki Fur Hood Parka (New Look): I've actually already bought this parka, as I was in desperate need of a warm, casual coat.  Despite being mercilessly teased by my Dad (apparently parkas aren't cool) and looking a little bit like a long lost member of Oasis wearing it, I'm really enjoying my first parka.  I've also spotted quite a few girls wearing them, so they must be on trend this autumn and winter!  This one is quilted on the inside, which makes it so cosy, and the furry hood is nice on a cold, rainy day. (£49.99)

2. Tan Quilted Tassel Satchel (River Island): I haven't bought a classic handbag for ages - instead I'm completely obsessed with satchels.  This tan coloured satchel is pretty as well as practical, and although they aren't for everyone, personally I really like the tassels! (£35)

3. Grey Contrast Sleeve Shrunken Knitted Jumper (New Look): I'm sure I said this in last year's post, but you can't beat a nice woolly jumper on a chilly day.  The grey front panel with black sleeves makes this one look a bit like a baseball tshirt, which is a style I'm really fond of. (£14.99)

4. Brushed Checked Shirt (Miss Selfridge): I adore the ultimate and ever versatile grunge staple that is the plaid shirt.  This one is a beautiful soft blue colour (my favourite), and would look great worn on its own, or with other layers. (£29)

5. Converse All Star Hi Leather Brown Shearling Exclusive (Office): I've had my heart set on a pair of fleece lined Converse high tops for years now, but I don't know if I'll ever really be able to justify springing for them!  This leather pair look sturdier than their standard canvas counterparts, so they would have a better chance of lasting through the Scottish winter!

6. Knitted Skater Dress (Miss Selfridge): Although I live in skinny jeans, I love wearing nice casual dresses sometimes.  This monochrome knitted skater dress looks like it could be dressed up or down very easily, depending on the occasion.  It also looks like it would be nice and cosy!

Satchel lot of space:

I bought a set of decorative hooks in the Debenhams sale quite a while ago with the intention of using them to store jewellery on.  Typically, the hooks sat in the corner of the room gathering dust for a few months after I purchased them, and in that time I developed a slight obsession with satchels.  Ergo, my jewellery hooks became satchel hooks.  I've been switching between bags a lot more frequently lately, and it makes sense to have them easily accessible.  I also think they look quite nice on display instead of stuffed in a cupboard, although I'm not sure Craig agrees...

I used easy to remove, adhesive command hooks this time, rather than hammering big holes into the bedroom wall.  This style of bag is generally quite light, so I'm not worried about hanging a few of them up together.  It's a good job, really, as I'm pretty sure the size of my satchel collection will only grow over time!

Inferior Inspiration #8:

With the sun shining so much lately, I've been inspired by everything bright and multicoloured!

1. The Wall's Picnicware range from John Lewis is both adorable and practical, with everything from plates and cups to cool bags and picnic blankets.  My personal favourite is the Twister print.  Who doesn't love a Twister ice lolly? (£4.50-£25)

2. This striped SKARUM cushion cover from IKEA is already in my possession, although I'm saving it to adorn the newly covered sofa.  More on that soon, hopefully! (£5)

3. I spotted this bright orange retro Wild & Wolf Trim phone whilst shopping in Oliver Bonas last week and fell in love.  I seem to have a weakness for novelty phones (our current landline handset is a hamburger phone). (£36)

4. I first saw this Urban Outfitters sleeveless shirt in a photo on Fiona's Instagram a little while ago, and I'm currently trying to decide if I want to take the plunge and buy it.  It has bicycles on it, what's not to like? (£35)

A 'haul' lot of shopping:

Firstly, I'd like to congratulate myself on the cheesiest post title of my blogging career so far. Secondly, here's a little post purely about some stuff that I bought for myself recently, also known (in the blogging and YouTube communities) as a 'haul'.  I even managed to find some bargains!

I scored a sweet deal with the recipe book, which was reduced to £5 in the Paperchase sale.  It was also the last one in the shop, and doesn't seem to be available online any more (sorry!).  It's one of those blank recipe notebooks that you can record your own culinary creations in, and it has plenty of pages!  I'm hoping it will inspire me not only to cook more, but also to start cooking from recipes and getting good at making my favourite dishes.

The copy of The Great Gatsby was a bargain too, as the back cover is damaged.  Waterstone's had reduced it to £2.99, and seeing as I was only buying it for myself to read I wasn't really bothered.  Damaged books need a home too!  Unlike almost everyone that I've met, I wasn't forced to read The Great Gatsby at school, and I've always felt that I missed out.  After seeing Baz Luhrmann's recent film adaptation, I decided it was definitely time to pick up a copy of the novel.

I nipped into HMV and was pleased to find that they had the new Alkaline Trio album back in stock (it was sold out last time I visited).  My Shame Is True is an excellent name for an album (for any budding Elvis Costello fans out there) and I'm sure this will be featuring in an Inferior Playlist some day soon.  I need to listen to the album more thoroughly, as so far there aren't any real stand out tracks for me.  It usually takes me a few listens to really like an album, and then I start to find my favourites.  I paid £12.99 for this, but didn't mind as I love the band and want to support them, and would much rather have a physical copy of the album than a download.

I also picked up The Suburbs by Arcade Fire.  Their earlier album Neon Bible has fast become one of my all time favourite records, but The Suburbs was the album with the most hype surrounding it when I worked at Fopp.  It has a totally different sound and feel to Neon Bible, but also to Funeral (the band's first album) and I'm hoping that I will come to enjoy The Suburbs just as much as them.  The album was £5.99 in HMV.

I am constantly on the look out for miracle products for curly hair.  Usually, in my experience, the bottle promises a great deal and delivers very little, which has made me shy away from spending money on hair styling products.  What's the point if they aren't going to work?  Upstairs in Boots on this shopping trip, I stumbled upon the holiday and travel section and found a huge variety of travel sized hair products.  I picked up the three 'curl friendly' products above for around £2 to £3 each (a fraction of what they would have cost in full size).  I will definitely be reporting my findings!

Yes, it may be tacky, but I have wanted a plastic bow ring for ages.  I think Kandee Johnson on Youtube was the first person I saw wearing one, and I instantly loved it.  I spotted this one in New Look for £2.50.  It fits my middle finger really well, and I love the colour.

Apologies for my face in this photo, but I thought the best way to show my new dress and belt was whilst wearing them!  This is me on my way to my sister's birthday party last weekend.  The dress was in the New Look sale for £12, and I adore the red flamingo print.  Flamingos seem to be everywhere this summer, for some reason!  It has a ruched waistline, which I decided to hide with a nude studded belt (also from New Look, and £3.99).  I think adding the belt made the dress hang better, and generally made the cut a bit more flattering.

Please leave links below if you have been indulging in any retail therapy lately, I love to shop vicariously!

Inferior Inspiration #6:

This inspiration post is really just a wishlist of cute summer clothes and accessories, because with the recent warmer weather has come the realisation that I have no summer appropriate clothes...

1. Although playsuits rarely fit nicely on me in real life, this one from New Look looks lovely on whoever they decapitated and dismembered to get the above image.  I'm definitely tempted to give it a go!  The playsuit seems pretty versatile, and could be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.  It's an online exclusive, though, so won't be available in stores. (£16.99)

 2. I very nearly bought these Vans in the Office sale the other day.  The neon pink might not seem like my usual style, but I think it's balanced out by the grey, and I do like to embrace my girliness every once in a while! (£25)

3. Iona from Iona Blogs alerted my attention to this adorable fox satchel from the online store Temporary Secretary on Twitter, and it was love at first sight!  I'm probably going to order one of these for myself in the very near future! (£18)

4. If a backpack is more your style, how about this one from the Paperchase sale?  Just because it's sensible, doesn't mean it can't be cute!  Useful for summer expeditions and adventures. (£12.50)

5. After seeing this iPhone case in store today, it would be totally impractical to have on your phone, but it's still a fun design!  It's also from Paperchase. (£12)

Oliver Bonas, Edinburgh:

If you've never heard of Oliver Bonas, don't worry, you and I were in the same boat up until a week ago.  The stores are primarily based in London, with a few scattered across England, but the brand new Edinburgh shop is the first one to reach Scotland.  I was invited along (by the lovely Emma!) with a few other bloggers to celebrate the Hanover Street store's grand opening, and I had a fantastic time!

I was very excited to find out that Oliver Bonas sells a huge array of clothes, jewellery, homeware and even beauty products.  I was especially excited about the homeware!  Apparently Oliver Tress, the founder of Oliver Bonas based the idea for the business on 'his love for buying unusual gifts for friends on his travels'.  This means that the stock is hugely varied, and there is something for every price range.  The Edinburgh shop is laid out beautifully, with attractive displays and plenty of space to browse.  Think Anthropologie, but a little younger and with more neon colours!

I love the cardboard stag heads in the photo above, they're the most decorative ones I've ever seen!  My favourite has to be the little birdhouse on the far left, though.  Wouldn't that be a cute addition to any home?

This necklace is one of many stunning statement necklaces on display at the back of the Edinburgh store.  Normally I would be totally intimidated by jewellery like this, and I would never even think about trying to pull it off myself.  However, one of the lovely staff members at the event was wearing this necklace as part of her uniform, and it looked amazing!  She told me she was planning to wear it with her graduation dress, but it looked just as good with a simple black collared shirt.  It turns out it's a surprisingly versatile piece, and it just goes to show that it's worth trying these things on!

These ornate iron chairs in various pastel colours are a big part of the shop's window display at the moment, and I think they do a great job of summing up the feel of Oliver Bonas as a store.  They are also so summery!  If I had a patio, or even a balcony (sigh, a girl can dream) then I'd be in great danger of purchasing a few for myself!

Sofas, chairs, stools and benches from The Velvet Chair Company are dotted all over the Edinburgh store in a huge variety of colours.  I even tried one out, although the price tag made me a little bit nervous!  If you're looking to make a quality soft furnishing investment, however, the chairs look great and are obviously sturdy.

Just to add to the excitement, two barmen from Candy were on site to mix us up some delicious fresh cocktails (my favourite of which was served in a jam jar!) and we were all given a hand decorated Bibi's Bakery cupcake to take home with us.  Some of the best butter icing I've ever tasted ensued!

So, what did I buy?  Well, I honestly could have bought almost everything in the entire shop.  Lianne and Gillian kept (nervously) laughing every time I picked something up off a shelf and announced that I didn't just want it, but needed it, but that's really how I felt!  In the end, I was quite sensible and went for a Korres lip butter in jasmine (above) and two glass neon bottles that I had been eyeing up all night (below).

I had a lovely time at Oliver Bonas, and was extremely excited and grateful to be invited along.  I will undoubtedly be back in store to have more of a browse, and I would recommend it if any of the stock in my photos seems up your street.  If you're more local to Glasgow, you might be happy to hear that an Oliver Bonas is due to open on Byres Road soon.  If not, there is always the option to shop online, and there are literally thousands of products available there.  My poor bank balance!

Winter blues:

Chilly out, isn't it?  I'm still channelling winter with this all-blue ensemble that includes a woolly jumper, but that might have something to do with the fact that it's snowing in March...

Jumper: Primark (£7 in sale)
Jeans: H&M (old)
Shoes: Primark (£6 in sale)

I haven't really found much to buy in Primark lately, but while Craig was looking in their men's department I spied this anchor jumper, reduced to £7.  I picked one up in extra small and it fits like a cosy dream!  I have a feeling I'll get at least a few wears out of it before the weather warms up again.

These slip ons will probably have to wait for better weather before they get a proper outing, but they were another half price bargain (please excuse my veiny feet!).  I love the colour, and I thought they were a fun take on the studded/spiked slipper trend.  Although I probably wouldn't have shelled out £12 for them, I was happy to take a pair home for £6!

I thought I would include two of my favourite outfit photos that didn't make the cut for your enjoyment.  Not exactly model material, but at least I can laugh at myself...
